Football Game Preview: Cathedral Panthers vs. Bishop Stang Spartans

The Cathedral Panthers will take on the Bishop Stang Spartans at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Cathedral knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 31 points or more in their past four contests -- so hopefully Bishop Stang likes a good challenge.

On Friday, Cathedral humbled Hull with a 42-7 victory. With the Panthers ahead 35-0 at the half, the game was all but over already.

Cathedral's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Taqaire Bell, who picked up 111 receiving yards and one TD, and also rushed for 42 yards and one touchdown. Bell got the majority of those receiving yards when he pulled down a pass and took off for a gain of 92 yards. Another rusher making a difference was DJ Desir, who rushed for 67 yards and a pair of scores.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Cathedral was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 241 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, after soaring to 42 points the game before, Bishop Stang was a bit more limited in their matchup on Friday. They were outmatched by St. Mary's and fell 35-8. Bishop Stang has struggled against St. Mary's recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive lost matchup.

Cathedral pushed their record up to 4-1 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 9.0 points on average over those games. As for Bishop Stang, they now have a losing record of 2-3.
