Preview: South River Rams vs. Metuchen Bulldogs
After two games on the road, South River is heading back home. They will take on the Metuchen Bulldogs at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Last Saturday, South River came up short against Point Pleasant Boro and fell 58-48. While losing is never fun, South River can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New Jersey basketball rankings (they are ranked 316th, while Point Pleasant Boro is ranked 119th).
South River's defeat came about despite a quality game from Alex Grospe, who scored 31 points along with four steals. That was a full 64.6% of South River's points, marking the fourth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Eddie Herrera, who scored eight points.
Meanwhile, Metuchen had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 20.5 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Saturday. They snuck past North Plainfield with a 48-44 win.
South River's defeat dropped their record down to 5-7. As for Metuchen, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a massive bump to their 7-5 record this season.
South River beat Metuchen 74-66 in their previous meeting back in December of 2023. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Metuchen's Jason Woods, who scored 32 points along with six rebounds. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will South River still be able to contain him? There's only one way to find out.
