Basketball Recap: Mountain View Takes a Loss

Mountain View was the 58-55 winner over Payson when they last played one another back in February of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Mountain View Bruins were just a bucket shy of victory on Friday and fell 47-46 to the Payson Lions. While losing is never fun, the Bruins can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Utah basketball rankings (they are ranked 66th, while the Lions are ranked 17th).

When it comes to explaining why Mountain View lost, don't look at Jaxson Hockersmith. Despite the final result, he went 5 of 9 on his way to 16 points and eight rebounds. Hockersmith is on a roll when it comes to boards, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last five games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Brennan Olsen, who posted ten points and three steals.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Payson to victory, but perhaps none more so than Zandon Theobald, who earned six points along with five rebounds and three steals. Legend Reynoso was another key player, putting up seven points and seven boards.

Mountain View is on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-11. As for Payson, their record is now 13-3.

Mountain View didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 68-57 defeat against Provo on the 21st. Payson has also already played their next matchup, a 66-60 loss against Uintah on the 21st.
