Basketball Recap: Marianna Comes Up Short

Marianna fought the good fight in their overtime contest against Chipley on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 44-43 to the Chipley Tigers. The loss continues a trend for the Bulldogs in their matchups with the Tigers: they've now lost four in a row.

Marianna lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Harmoni Gibson, who posted 19 points and six boards. Those 19 points gave Gibson a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Dessiah Gee, who earned 13 points.

Chipley can attribute much of their success to Addyson Suggs, who went 5 of 10 on her way to 14 points along with seven boards and three blocks. The team also got some help courtesy of Niyonah Garner, who had seven points in addition to five rebounds and three steals.

Marianna's defeat dropped their record down to 6-8. As for Chipley, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 12 games, which provided a nice bump to their 13-3 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Marianna will square off against Holmes County at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Chipley, they will take on Jay at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
