League recap: South climbs in standings with win

South was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fourth to first in Pioneer. Earlier in the week, the Spartans triumphed over Palos Verdes Peninsula 32-18.

North moved up to 267 from 315 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Saxons climbed the ranks as a result of a 30-27 win over the Saxons.

El Segundo's dynamic duo of Daniel Zeman and Kaylin Franklin proved tough for Laguna Hills to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Zeman threw for 124 yards and two touchdowns and Franklin had 73 yards receiving. Jamie Stewart helped El Segundo's passing attack out by catching two balls for 22 yards.

Brandon Chavez was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 11 carries, he ran for 110 yards as South fell to the Hawks. Ian Van Natta also contributed to the rushing game with 53 yards on the ground.

El Segundo's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Eagles feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Zeman has thrown for 948 yards and nine touchdowns this season, while Stewart has 25 catches for 257 yards. Austin Brasher leads the league in rushing with 273 yards.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Chris Hyduke's team takes on Torrance. At the moment, the Spartans are in first, while the Tartars are in fourth.

South led the league in scoring this week after putting up 32 points on the Panthers. Chavez in the win.
