Basketball Recap: Independence Takes a Loss

Independence was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their 33rd straight defeat dating back to last season. They took a blow against the Walnut Ridge Scots, falling 71-31. While losing is never fun, the 76ers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 776th, while the Scots are ranked 161st).

It was another big night for Marquis Lucas, who went 7 for 9 on his way to 17 points and three steals for Walnut Ridge. Lucas has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last ten times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Bryden Hodge, who went 5 of 8 on his way to 12 points.

Independence's loss dropped their record down to 0-11. As for Walnut Ridge, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 8-3.

Independence will take on Eastmoor Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Eastmoor Academy is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 51.7 points per game this season. As for Walnut Ridge, they will square off against Marion-Franklin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Walnut Ridge's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last five matches.
