Softball Game Preview: Liberty Christian Lions vs. Marion Giants

The Liberty Christian Lions will take on the Marion Giants at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Liberty Christian is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.

Liberty Christian will roll into the match after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up two runs on Saturday, then bounced right back against Park Tudor on Monday. The Lions blew past the Panthers 18-6. The victory was some much needed relief for the Lions as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

Ellie Callahan made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over five innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits (and not a single walk). With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 5.1 strikeouts per game. She was even better at the plate, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with two triples, two stolen bases, and five RBI. Those two triples gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Claire Callahan, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, five runs, and six RBI. Those five runs gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaitlyn Narwhold, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.

Liberty Christian always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .767. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, Marion was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their eighth straight defeat. They came up short against Lafayette Jefferson, falling 17-6.

Marion's loss dropped their record down to 5-17. As for Liberty Christian, their win bumped their record up to 8-10.

Everything went Liberty Christian's way against Marion in their previous matchup back in April of 2019, as Liberty Christian made off with a 9-1 victory. Do the Lions have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Giants turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
