Baseball Recap: Iona Prep Makes It Five in a Row at Home

Iona Prep and Mt. St. Michael Academy pushed the score to 20-1 the last time they played Mt. St. Michael Academy, but on Monday defenses reigned supreme. The Gaels' pitcher stepped up to hand the Mountaineers a 2-0 shutout. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Gaels have posted since March 19th.

Mt. St. Michael Academy's batters probably weren't too happy with Shane Jelenevsky, who pitched a no hitter and racked up 16 Ks (he gave up a single walk). Those 16 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for Jelenevsky.

On the hitting side, Devin Diaz was excellent, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3. Sean Concannon was another key player, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.

Iona Prep pushed their record up to 8-4-1 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.4 runs on average over those games. As for Mt. St. Michael Academy, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-6.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Iona Prep will challenge Cardinal Hayes at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The Gaels are facing the Cardinals at the right time seeing as the Cardinals are stuck on an eight-game losing streak. As for Mt. St. Michael Academy, they will square off against St. Peter's at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Eagles' pitching crew has only allowed 2.2 runs per game this season, so the Mountaineers' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
