Basketball Recap: Standing Bear Comes Up Short

On Tuesday, the Standing Bear Grizzlies lost to the York Dukes at home by a 44-26 margin. While losing is never fun, the Grizzlies can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 151st, while the Dukes are ranked 21st).

Despite the defeat, Standing Bear saw an underclassman step up: freshman Lily Hansmeier posted 11 points. What's more, Hansmeier posted four boards, the most she's had since back in December of 2024.

York's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Chloe Koch, who scored 12 points and four steals. Koch has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. Mira Garrett also deserves some recognition as she scored her first points of the season.

Standing Bear has traveled a rocky road recently having lost 11 of their last 14 matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-14 record this season. York's victory was their eighth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 20-2.

Coming up, Standing Bear will be playing at home against Plattsmouth at 5:45 p.m. on Friday. Plattsmouth is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 52 points per game this season. As for York, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 56-22 win against Hastings on the 20th.
