Ohio wrestlers win Walsh Ironman titles; Basketball continues

Six Ohio kids win Ironman titles; Brittenham reaches 1,000-point mark; Two West Virginia commits back away.

Graham Local (St. Paris), which has won the last 10 Division II state wrestling championships, scored 198 points to capture the title at the Walsh Ironman last weekend at Walsh Jesuit (Cuyahoga Falls). Monroeville finished fifth (99), St. Edward (Cleveland) was sixth (93.5) and Perry (Massillon) placed eighth (88.5).

Individual winners from Ohio included Nathan Tomasello (103 pounds) of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy (Cuyahoga Falls), George Dicamillo (112) of St. Ignatius (Cleveland), Hunter Stieber (135) of Monroeville, Bo Jordan (145) of Graham Local (St. Paris), Ian Miller (152) of Oak Harbor and Chris Phillips (171) of Monroeville.

TOP PERFORMERS
* Kaysie Brittenham, Lake (Millbury) girls basketball: Brittenham finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Flyers to a 49-41 win over Anthony Wayne (Whitehouse) on Dec. 8. She passed the 1,000-point mark for her prep career with her 17th point.

* Brian Sullivan, Upper Arlington (Columbus) boys basketball: Sullivan scored 31 points to lead his team to a 65-39 victory over Thomas Worthington in the opening night of OCC-Central Division play Dec. 7. Sullivan has signed with Miami University.

* Andrew Malone, University School (Hunting Valley) swimming: Malone won the 100-yard breaststroke (56.8 seconds), the 50 freestyle (21.31) and swam on the winning 200 medley relay and 200 free relay. Malone's time in the 100 breast broke the meet record set by two-time Olympic gold medalist Mark Gangloff of Firestone (Akron) in 1998.

COMING THIS WEEK
* Reynoldsburg at Pickerington North, girls basketball:
In a rematch of a Division I regional championship girls basketball game won by Reynoldsburg 45-35 last season, the Raiders will travel to North (Pickerington) on Friday. Reynoldsburg lost its top three scorers from last season but has been boosted by the addition of Zanesville transfer Shiloh Murphy. North is led by Villanova-recruit Kavunaa Edwards.



* Thornton Park Tournament, ice hockey: The defending Division I state-champion St. Ignatius (Cleveland) ice hockey team is among the eight-team field at the 40th-annual Thornton Park high school hockey tournament which begins Wednesday. The championship will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday.

* Hilliard Invitational, gymnastics: Several of central Ohio's top gymnastics teams, including St. Francis de Sales (Columbus), Thomas Worthington (Worthington), Worthington Kilbourne (Columbus) and Upper Arlington (Columbus) will be in attendance for the Hilliard Invitational at Saturday at Hilliard Bradley. DeSales, Thomas and Kilbourne all made it to the state meet last season.

RECRUITING NEWS
Marion-Franklin (Columbus) junior basketball player Elijah Macon recently re-opened his recruiting after previously verbally committing to West Virginia. The Mountaineers still are high on the 6-foot-8 post player's list, along with Cincinnati, Dayton, USC, Xavier and Wisconsin. … Northland (Columbus) junior Jalen Robinson, a 6-9 post player, also has de-committed from West Virginia after verbally committing to the school during his sophomore season.
