Basketball Recap: Mason Ellison's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Loyola Blakefield over Gilman

Loyola Blakefield fought the good fight in their overtime match against Gilman on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell 78-69 to the Gilman Greyhounds. The Dons were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Greyhounds apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in January of 2024.

Loyola Blakefield's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mason Ellison, who posted 19 points. Ellison's evening made it four games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Terry Brooks was another key player, putting up 14 points.

Loyola Blakefield has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 12-10 record this season. As for Gilman, with the win, they broke their five-game losing streak and moved their record to 3-7.

Loyola Blakefield won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Bethel Academy at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. One thing working in Bethel Academy's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last ten matchups. As for Gilman, they are taking a road trip to challenge Pallotti at 7:00 p.m. on January 24th.
