Baseball Recap: Fairfield Starts Season with Win at Home

Fairfield took care of business in their home opener (and then some) on Monday. Everything went their way against the William Penn Bearcats as the Fairfield Knights made off with a 16-5 win. The Knights have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Bearcats, too.

Vaughn Lewis and Jayden Bell made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Lewis tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Meanwhile, Bell tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. What's more, Lewis posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. At bat, Lewis scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances, while Bell scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.

In other batting news, Fairfield let Stephen Higgs and Layton Wilhide run wild. Higgs went 3-for-4 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run, while Wilhide scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. The dominant performance also gave Wilhide a new career-high in hits (two). Another player making a difference was Riley Brown, who scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.

Coming up, Fairfield will take on Francis Scott Key at 4:15 p.m. on Friday. As for William Penn, they will square off against Reading at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
