Basketball Recap: Centennial Comes Up Short

If Centennial was riding high fresh off their 59-36 takedown of Alamogordo last Monday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Centennial Hawks were just a bucket shy of victory on Thursday and fell 33-32 to the Mayfield Trojans. The Hawks have struggled against the Trojans recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.

Centennial lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Joy Hunt, who posted nine points and six boards. Rizaya Cash was another key player, going 5 of 7 on her way to 11 points.

Mayfield got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Lorrena Viarreal out in front who had six points and six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Jazlene Ruiz, who scored four points along with eight boards and seven steals.

Centennial's defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 6-11. As for Mayfield, the victory was the 13th in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 14-3.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Centennial will host Gadsden at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Centennial is facing Gadsden at the right time seeing as Gadsden is stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Mayfield, they will welcome Alamogordo at 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
