Baseball Recap: Highland Gets the Win

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Highland ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with an 8-6 victory over the Cesar Chavez Champions. The win continues a trend for the Hawks in their matchups with the Champions: they've now won five in a row.

Jack Song looked comfortable as he pitched 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.

At the plate, Highland let Gage Tarwater and Nixon Harnish run wild. Tarwater went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI, while Harnish went 3-for-4 with two runs and one double. Those three hits gave Harnish a new career-high. Jaxon Conrad also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen bases of the season.

Highland kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits every time they've taken the field this season.

Highland's record is now 9-1. As for Cesar Chavez, they now have a losing record of 3-4.

Looking ahead, Highland will take on Vestavia Hills in a tournament on Wednesday. The Rebels' pitching crew has only allowed 3.8 runs per game this season, so the Hawks' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Cesar Chavez, they will be playing at home against Maryvale at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The matchup will give the Champions their first taste of in-conference action this season.
