High school basketball: Jordan Smith's 40-point outburst headlines day one action at City of Palms Classic

FORT MYERS, FLA. — The City of Palms Classic tipped off today and runs through Tuesday, Dec. 23. MaxPreps will provide live updates from the Suncoast Credit Union Arena throughout the six-day event.

Top five senior Jordan Smith started off the loaded tournament with a signature performance for No. 2 Paul VI (Chantilly, Va.), dropping 40 points in a 93-60 victory over Garfield Heights (Ohio). Smith shot 18-of-25 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line while also contributing five rebounds, four assists and three steals while playing just over 23 minutes in the impressive effort.

The second game of the day saw top 35 Oklahoma State signee Latrell Allmond tally a game-high 21 points while shooting 7-of-10 from the field to guide No. 3 Petersburg (Va.) to a 70-60 victory over Imhotep Charter (Philadelphia, Pa.). After falling behind by two points early in the first quarter, the Crimson Wave held the lead for the final 29 minutes of the contest despite the Panthers never falling behind by more than 13 points.

The headlining matchup of the day saw No. 10 Calvary Christian Academy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) outlast No. 18 Owasso (Okla.) 62-52 behind a strong effort from five-star junior Cayden Daughtry who finished with 28 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in the win for the Eagles.

Archbishop Stepinac (White Plains, N.Y.) made quick work of previously unbeaten Sarasota (Fla.) in an 89-62 blowout. The Crusaders were led by top 30 USC signee Darius Ratliff who pumped in 19 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots while shooting 7-of-7 from the field and 3-of-3 from 3-point range.

The final game of the opening day sees defending champion No. 4 Columbus (Miami, Fla.), face No. 30 Principia (St. Louis, Mo.). Both won state titles in their respective states last season. 



Friday includes three highly-anticipated games to wrap up the first round of the 16-team Classic bracket as perennial National Top 10 powerhouse Long Island Lutheran (Brookville, N.Y.) faces No. 14 Bartlett (Tenn.), top-ranked Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.) battles No. 7 Bishop McNamara (Forestville, Md.) and No. 8 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) takes on No. 16 The Villages Charter (The Villages, Fla.).
