High school basketball: No. 1 Wheeler downs No. 7 Bishop McNamara 78-74 behind 37 points from Colben Landrew

FORT MYERS, FLA. — The City of Palms Classic tipped off Thursday, Dec. 18 and runs through Tuesday, Dec. 23. MaxPreps will provide live updates from the Suncoast Credit Union Arena throughout the six-day event.

The headlining game of the first round of action saw top-ranked Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.) outlast No. 7 Bishop McNamara (Forestville, Md.) in a 78-74 thriller. 

Top 25 Connecticut signee put on a show in the win, pouring in 37 points and eight rebounds while shooting 12-of-18 from the field, 6-of-10 from 3-point range and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. The evenly matched contest between top 10 opponents saw 16 lead changes and 10 ties.

In the first Classic Bracket game of the day on Friday, No. 14 Bartlett (Tenn.) knocked off perennial National Top 10 powerhouse Long Island Lutheran (Brookville, N.Y.) 71-57 sparked by a strong second half that saw them outscore LuHi 43-25. Sophomore guard Braylon Williams led the way with a game-high 20 points while top 60 junior Dylan Jones chipped in 19 in the win.



In the final quarterfinal contest on Friday, No. 16 The Villages Charter (The Villages, Fla.) downed No. 8 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) 65-59 led by a team-high 23 points from four-star junior Aaron Britt, Jr.

The Signature Series also tipped off Friday as Prolific Prep (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) blew past CIA-Bella Vista (Phoenix, Ariz.) 80-58 paced by 27 points, five rebounds and three steals from top five senior Caleb Holt while Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) took down Gillion Academy (Springfield, Va.) 67-61 in the other Signature Series.

Top five senior Jordan Smith started off the loaded tournament with a signature performance for No. 2 Paul VI (Chantilly, Va.), dropping 40 points in a 93-60 victory over Garfield Heights (Ohio). Smith shot 18-of-25 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line while also contributing five rebounds, four assists and three steals while playing just over 23 minutes in the impressive effort.

The second game of the day saw top 35 Oklahoma State signee Latrell Allmond tally a game-high 21 points while shooting 7-of-10 from the field to guide No. 3 Petersburg (Va.) to a 70-60 victory over Imhotep Charter (Philadelphia, Pa.). After falling behind by two points early in the first quarter, the Crimson Wave held the lead for the final 29 minutes of the contest despite the Panthers never falling behind by more than 13 points.

The headlining matchup of the day saw No. 10 Calvary Christian Academy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) outlast No. 18 Owasso (Okla.) 62-52 behind a strong effort from five-star junior Cayden Daughtry who finished with 28 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in the win for the Eagles.

Archbishop Stepinac (White Plains, N.Y.) made quick work of previously unbeaten Sarasota (Fla.) in an 89-62 blowout. The Crusaders were led by top 30 USC signee Darius Ratliff who pumped in 19 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots while shooting 7-of-7 from the field and 3-of-3 from 3-point range.

The final game of the opening day saw defending event champion No. 4 Columbus (Miami, Fla.) fall to No. 30 Principia (St. Louis, Mo.) 74-62. After falling behind 30-20 late in the second quarter, Principia flipped the script with four consecutive points to end the half down 30-24. In the third quarter, Principia went on a 17-0 run to pull ahead 45-34.

Top 100 Wake Forest signee Quentin Coleman finished with a game-high 31 points in the upset victory for the Panthers.
