Baseball Game Preview: Marshwood Hawks vs. Westbrook Blue Blazes

The Marshwood Hawks are taking a road trip to square off against the Westbrook Blue Blazes at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Marshwood has seven straight wins, Westbrook has seven straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Marshwood came out on top against Cheverus on Tuesday thanks in part to the team's impressive five-run second inning. The Hawks were the clear victors by a 9-1 margin over the Stags. Considering the Hawks have won five contests by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Tyler Hussey and Ronan Garrett were major factors no matter where they played. Throwing, Hussey didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. Meanwhile, Garrett tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Hussey has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up a single earned run in five consecutive appearances. At the plate, Hussey went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases and one RBI, while Garrett went 1-for-4 with three RBI and one stolen base. Those three stolen bases gave Hussey a new career-high.

In other batting news, Silas Reimels was excellent, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Evin Aceto also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Gorham hit Westbrook with a four-run third inning on Monday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Blue Blazes came up short against the Rams, falling 10-0.

Marshwood's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-1. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.3 runs on average over those games. As for Westbrook, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-8.

Everything went Marshwood's way against Westbrook when the teams last played back in April of 2024, as Marshwood made off with an 11-2 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Hawks since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
