Baseball Game Preview: Bishop Shanahan Eagles vs. Episcopal Academy Churchmen

The Bishop Shanahan Eagles will head out to square off against the Episcopal Academy Churchmen at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Bishop Shanahan will be strutting in after a win while Episcopal Academy will be coming in after a defeat.

Bishop Shanahan barely beat Sun Valley the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Eagles never let the Vanguards get on the board and left with a 7-0 victory on Tuesday. That's two games straight that the Eagles have won by exactly seven runs.

Not much got past Griff Ceribelli, who gave up just three hits and racked up nine Ks to keep Sun Valley off the board. Ceribelli also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Bishop Shanahan is 3-1 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 6-7 otherwise.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Trey Merritt, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Owen McGrory was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two doubles.

Meanwhile, Episcopal Academy suffered their closest loss since March 22nd on Tuesday. They fell just short of Springside Chestnut Hill Academy by a score of 8-6. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

The win made it two in a row for Bishop Shanahan and bumps their season record up to 9-8. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.0 runs over those games. As for Episcopal Academy, they moved to 13-8-1 with that defeat, which also ended their three-game winning streak.

Bishop Shanahan came up short against Episcopal Academy in their previous meeting back in March of 2021, falling 7-3. Can the Eagles avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
