Softball Game Preview: Garrett Railroaders vs. Churubusco Eagles

The Garrett Railroaders will challenge the Churubusco Eagles at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams are strolling into their matchups after big wins in their previous games.

Garrett not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since May 14, 2024. They were the clear victors by a 14-3 margin over Westview. The Railroaders haven't had any issues with the Warriors recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.

Ashlee Vanderbosch made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out eight over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in two of her four plate appearances. Those runs marked the first that she scored this season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sarah DePew, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, and two doubles. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jayiden Feicht, who scored four runs while going 2-for-3.

While Churubusco didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-16), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They put the hurt on Manchester with a sharp 13-3 victory on Wednesday. The Eagles might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four contests by nine runs or more this season.

Churubusco pushed their record up to 7-0 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. As for Garrett, their record is now 3-1.

Garrett was able to grind out a solid win over Churubusco in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, winning 8-4. Do the Railroaders have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Eagles turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
