Basketball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Khloe Schmidt and Jazzlyn Gomez Lead Aztec to Victory

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Volcano Vista, Aztec was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They managed a 31-26 victory over the Durango Demons. For the Tigers, this counts as revenge for the 39-27 win the Demons walked away with the last time they faced one another back in December of 2024.

Leading Aztec to victory were Jazzlyn Gomez and Khloe Schmidt. Gomez posted 15 points in addition to five boards and five steals, while Schmidt earned six points along with five rebounds and three steals. Schmidt is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last five games she's played dating back to last season. Kamber Martin also deserves some recognition as she posted her first block of the season.

Despite the defeat, Durango had strong showings from Jaelyn Alston, who had eight points, and Aysia Matthews, who put up five points and 11 boards. With that strong performance, Matthews is now averaging an impressive 8.5 rebounds per game.

Aztec's record now sits at 3-1. As for Durango, they are on a five-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-4.

Aztec has already played their next game, a 42-34 loss against Newcomb on the 13th. As for Durango, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 52-36 victory against Shiprock on the 13th.
