Football Game Preview: Riverton Hawks vs. Athens Warriors

Riverton is 0-8 against Athens since September of 2016 but things could change on Friday. The Hawks will face off against the Warriors at 7:00 p.m. Riverton has given up an average of 39.9 points per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Riverton came into their game on Friday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They had to suffer through a 38-8 loss at the hands of PORTA/Ashland-Chandlerville Central/Greenview. Having soared to a lofty 36 points in the game before, the Hawks couldn't push the score so high this time.

Meanwhile, it was close, but on Friday Athens sidestepped New Berlin/Franklin/Waverly for a 29-27 win.

Riverton better keep an eye on Gage Honn. He was instrumental in Athens' win, rushing for 153 yards and two touchdowns.

Athens was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 262 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 158 rushing yards in ten consecutive matchups dating back to last season.

Riverton's loss dropped their record down to 2-6. As for Athens, their record is now 5-3.

Riverton was taken down by Athens 64-14 when the teams last played back in October of 2023. That game was all but decided by halftime, at which point the Hawks were down 56-7.
