The Amite County Trojans will square off against the Wesson Cobras at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both teams are coming into the game red-hot, with Amite County sitting on four straight wins and Wesson on seven.
On Friday, Amite County earned a 20-8 victory over Wilkinson County. Those 20 points were actually the fewest the Trojans have put up all season, but given the result they're probably not too concerned.
Amite County relied on the efforts of Kemauri Thompson, who rushed for 74 yards and one TD on only nine carries, and Marquavius McGhee, who rushed for 81 yards and one score.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Amite County was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 207 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 207 rushing yards in ten consecutive contests dating back to last season.
Amite County didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Keyonte Cobb, Rajuan Clark Jr, Jakaden Abrams, and Shemar Anderson picked up one apiece. Anderson got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Wesson). They came out on top against Loyd Star by a score of 49-41 on Friday. The score was all tied up 19-19 at the break, but the Cobras were the better team in the second half.
Amite County better keep an eye on Damarion Smith. He was instrumental in Wesson's win, picking up 111 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns. Another player making a difference was Wesley Loy, who picked up 100 receiving yards and one score.
Amite County's win bumped their record up to 5-1. As for Wesson, their victory bumped their record up to 7-0.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Amite County has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 281.5 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Wesson struggles in that department as they've been averaging 174.6 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Amite County took a serious blow against Wesson in their previous matchup back in October of 2020, falling 39-0. Can the Trojans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
