Basketball Recap: Smithson Valley Comes Up Short

Smithson Valley lost against Wagner back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Smithson Valley Rangers were dealt an 87-36 loss at the hands of the Wagner Thunderbirds. While losing is never fun, the Rangers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 533rd, while the Thunderbirds are ranked 19th).

When it comes to explaining why Smithson Valley lost, don't look at Cyanna Cavazos. Despite the final result, she posted nine points. The team also got some help courtesy of Isabelle DiMery, who put up six points.

Smithson Valley's defeat was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 8-15. As for Wagner, they are on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 13 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 19-3 record this season.

Smithson Valley will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Tivy at 11:30 a.m. on December 31st. Wagner also won't see the court for a while: their next game is against Boerne-Champion at 11:30 a.m. on December 31st. Boerne-Champion has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the matchup with four straight defeats, while Wagner will come in with ten straight wins.
