1. John Curtis

One of the country’s most consistent programs, John Curtis seems to be a threat to win a state title every single season. This year is certainly no different, as the Patriots return seven starters on defense, including athletic cornerback Jonathan McKnight. Luke Charpentier and Darian Campbell are massive offensive linemen that will make sure the team’s veer offense clicks on all cylinders. They should allow a young offense to thrive in J.T. Curtis’ proven system.

2. Destrehan

It’s hard to pick against the Wildcats, who have won 28 straight games and back-to-back 5A state titles. Though Destrehan graduates many of the stars from its 2008 championship run, this program is used to reloading. A strong offensive line will pave the way for a powerful rushing attack, led by Henry Lenox and Marshall Charles.

3. Evangel Christian

Another one of the premier programs in the state (and nation), Evangel Christian is always a state title threat. Last year, the team’s only in-state loss came against John Curtis, who they’ll likely see again in the 2A playoffs. This year’s version of the Eagles is talent laden, starting on the defensive line with senior Brandon Jackson and junior Jermauria Rasco, one of the top 2011 prospects in the country. Receiver Eric Thomas, who had over 1,000 yards last year, and linebacker Deonte Thompson, who had over 100 tackles, also return.

4. West Monroe

Despite losing several key skill players, the West Monroe Rebels should be near the top of the Louisiana 5A scene in 2009. Quarterback D.J. Banks and running back Ladarius Abrams are gone, but given the team’s depth, it’s no stretch to say that the team will find replacements. A strong offensive line will help pave the way. Jordan Allen, a jumbo defensive end who stands 6-foot-6, will be key on the other side of the ball. He’s has already committed to LSU, and could be the state’s best player. {VIDEO_646a2c7a-9802-40ef-8ebf-75b51383cd60,floatRightWithBar}

5. Lutcher

Not only did Lutcher finish 12-2 last year, but the team’s two losses were by a combined five points. The reigning 3A state champs will return quarterback Gavin Webster, who tossed for nearly 2,000 as a junior. He’ll throw to one of the country’s top wide receivers, Jarvis Landry, who had 945 receiving yards and 10 touchdown catches as only a sophomore.
