Recap: Otay Ranch Mustangs vs. Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders
The Otay Ranch Mustangs''s recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their third straight loss. They took a serious blow against Mater Dei Catholic, falling 42-14. While losing is never fun, Otay Ranch can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 571st, while Mater Dei Catholic is ranked 104th).
Even if they lost, Otay Ranch's defensive line sure didn't make it easy: Mater Dei Catholic's QB was sacked four times before it was all said and done. Leading the way was Diego Martinez and his two sacks.
Mater Dei Catholic's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Jordan Jackson, who rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown on only five carries. The team also got some help courtesy of Kartell Purvis, who threw for 178 yards and three touchdowns on only 16 passes.
Otay Ranch's loss was their third straight at home, which dropped their overall record down to 2-8. That rough patch could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 13.7 points per game. As for Mater Dei Catholic, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 6-3.
Otay Ranch does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Mater Dei Catholic is also done with their season.
