Softball Recap: Coventry Wins High-Profile Contest Against Cumberland

Coventry faced Cumberland in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Saturday. The Oakers walked away with a 9-4 victory over the Clippers. The win continues a trend for the Oakers in their matchups with the Clippers: they've now won four in a row.

Sage SoareS made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one run and one double.

In other batting news, Coventry let LiLyana BeLL and Izzy Dyl run wild. Bell went 2-for-5 with three RBI, one run, and one double, while Dyl went a perfect 3-for-3 with one double and one RBI. Payton Baris was another key player, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

Coventry's victory bumped their record up to 8-2. As for Cumberland, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-11.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Coventry is set to challenge their familiar foe La Salle Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Oakers 2.7, the Rams 1.2) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Cumberland will face off against rival Westerly at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
