Basketball Game Preview: Summit Academy Bears vs. North Sanpete Hawks

Summit Academy took a loss when they played away from home on Wednesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. Nixon Savage had a dynamite game for Summit Academy, dropping a double-double with 27 points and 16 rebounds. Savage's evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least 19 points. Tanner Meredith also deserves some recognition as he scored his first points of the season.

Summit Academy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've posted since back in December of 2024.

Meanwhile, North Sanpete was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their ninth straight loss. They were a single point away from ending the streak, but they lost a 59-58 heartbreaker at the hands of Carbon. While the Hawks didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Dinos 19-13 in the first quarter.

Summit Academy will have to keep a close watch on McKay Schlappi and Bryce Swapp, a pair of players who had a big impact on North Sanpete's prior game. Schlappi posted 16 points in addition to five assists and three steals, while Swapp went 5 for 9 en route to 18 points. The dominant performance gave Swapp a new career-high in points. Another player making a difference was Jaden Bowles, who put up eight points.

North Sanpete's defeat dropped their record down to 3-16. As for Summit Academy, their win bumped their record up to 3-20.

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Summit Academy has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 26.8 boards per game. However, it's not like North Sanpete struggles in that department as they've been averaging 25.9 rebounds.
