Basketball Recap: Stetson Perry's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Thoreau over Zuni

Thoreau was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They fell 58-50 to the Zuni Thunderbirds. The Hawks were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Thunderbirds earlier this season, when they won 50-43.

Several Hawks players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Stetson Perry, who posted 16 points in addition to eight boards and four steals. Perry has been hot, having posted three or more steals the last eight times he's played. Another player making a difference was Matthew Shirley, who had eight points and seven rebounds.

Ty'Shawn Nieto continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Zuni, dropping a double-double with 18 points and 16 boards. Nieto also grabbed five steals, which is notable because Zuni is 5-2 when he posts at least three steals, but 8-9 otherwise. Deron Lastyano was another key player, putting up seven points along with eight rebounds and five assists.

Thoreau now has a losing record of 11-12. As for Zuni, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 13-11.

Thoreau didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 66-55 win against Wingate on the 19th. As for Zuni, they have also already played their next contest, a 49-41 victory against Newcomb on the 19th.
