It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but Mt. Vernon ultimately got the result they hoped for on Friday. They slipped by the Johnstown-Monroe Johnnies 35-34. With that victory, the Yellowjackets brought their scoring average up to 26.2 points per game.

Mason Richards produced another solid effort rushing for 314 yards and four TDs while picking up 15.0 yards per carry. His longest rush was for an incredible 84 yards.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Mt. Vernon was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 397 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 188 rushing yards in five consecutive games dating back to last season.

Another reason for the win was Mt. Vernon's imposing defensive line, which managed to get into the backfield for four sacks. Johnstown-Monroe's QB won't forget Luke Mullins anytime soon given he sacked him twice.

Johnstown-Monroe lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Tyler Sheets, who rushed for 87 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The team also got some help courtesy of Preston Carey, who gained 115 total yards and a touchdown.

The win got Mt. Vernon back to even at 2-2. As for Johnstown-Monroe, this is the second loss in a row for them and also nudges their season record down to 2-2.

Mt. Vernon didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, a 38-22 victory against Heath on the 19th. As for Johnstown-Monroe, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, a 43-42 win against Watkins Memorial on the 19th.
