Basketball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Mason Ward and Chase Brooks Lead Walnut Grove to Victory

It was a proper cat-fight when Walnut Grove challenged Greenville on Friday. The Walnut Grove Wildcats blew past the Greenville Lions 61-41. Given the Wildcats' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 55th, while the Lions are ranked 601st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Walnut Grove was led to victory by Chase Brooks and Mason Ward. Brooks went 5 of 7 en route to 14 points and four steals, while Ward went 5 for 11 on his way to 15 points. That's the most points Ward has posted since back in November of 2024. Austin Wade also deserves some recognition as he scored his first points of the season.

Walnut Grove pushed their record up to 21-8 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 66.5 points per game. As for Greenville, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost nine of their last 11 matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 13-14 record this season.

Walnut Grove will host Lovejoy at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Lovejoy will roll in looking for their eighth straight victory, something Walnut Grove surely won't give up without a fight. As for Greenville, they will head out on the road to face off against Sherman at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Greenville is facing Sherman at the right time seeing as Sherman is stuck on a ten-game losing streak.
