MaxPreps 2014 All-American Football Team

It is difficult to completely summarize the breadth of the career of Allen (Texas) quarterback Kyler Murray.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound quarterback led Allen to state titles both as a sophomore and as a junior last season, when he took home MaxPreps National Player of the Year honors.

After throwing for 4,713 yards and 54 touchdowns and rushing for 1,495 yards and 25 scores, Murray not only secured yet another Allen state title - but another MaxPreps National Player of the Year award.

Murray becomes the first player to repeat as MaxPreps National Player of the Year. Previous winners of the award include Terrelle Pryor, Johnathan Gray and Derrick Henry.



Folsom quarterback Jake Browning is the runnerup for the award.

It was Murray's incredible ability to overcome all obstacles that set him apart. He and Allen were tested routinely by some of the top teams in the state, and ergo, the country. Murray never faltered, always finding a way to lead Allen to victory.

He never lost a high school football game.

Murray headlines an impressive assembly of talent on this year's All-American squad.


First Team Offense

WR – Trenton Irwin, 6-2, 190, Hart (Newhall, Calif.)
Irwin, the Los Angeles Daily News Player of the Year, capped a remarkable career with his best season yet, hauling in 106 catches for 1,974 yards and 22 touchdowns.



WR – Tren'Davian Dickson, 6-0, 160, Navasota (Texas), Baylor
Dickson (the only junior honored on these teams) had a season for the ages, finishing with 2,163 yards and an astounding 39 receiving touchdowns - a national record.

WR – Damarkus Lodge, 6-3, 190, Cedar Hill (Texas)
Lodge led Cedar Hill to its second-consecutive state title. He caught 63 passes for 1,219 yards and 25 touchdowns.

TE – Alize Jones, 6-4, 226, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas), UCLA
Jones was a key weapon for Bishop Gorman, hauling in 41 passes for 930 yards and 13 touchdowns. He was a Division I all-state pick.

OL – Tristen Hoge, 6-6, 275, Highland (Pocatello, Idaho), Notre Dame
Hoge took home Class 5A Player of the Year honors after leading Highland to a perfect 12-0 season.

OL – Martez Ivey, 6-6, 275, Apopka (Fla.)
Ivey was an all-area pick and helped lead Apopka to a Class 8A title.

OL – Mitch Hyatt, 6-5, 290, North Gwinnett (Suwanee, Ga.), Clemson
Hyatt was an easy all-region pick after his second season dominating opposing defensive ends.



OL – Richie Petitbon, 6-4, 300, Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.), Alabama
An all-Met first team pick, Petitbon led Gonzaga to a 10-3 season.

OL – Chuma Edoga, 6-3, 280, McEachern (Powder Springs, Ga.), USC
Edoga was a first team all-state pick in Georgia's Class AAAAAA. He helped lead McEachern to the state semifinals.

QB – Kyler Murray, 5-11, 180, Allen (Texas), Texas A&M
Mentioned among the all-time Texas high school football greats, Murray led Allen to its third-straight state title in 2014.

QB – Jake Browning, 6-2, 180, Folsom (Calif.), Washington
Playing in one of the nation's most potent offenses, Browning was sensational, completing 360 of 524 passes for 91 touchdowns versus only seven interceptions. He also rushed for five scores.

RB – Sotonye (Soso) Jamabo, 6-2, 210, Plano West (Texas)
Jamabo, an easy Class 6A all-state pick, rushed 235 times for 2,279 yards and 44 touchdowns.

RB – Jacques Patrick, 6-0, 210, Timber Creek (Orlando, Fla.), Florida State
Patrick's final season was a dominant one. He carried the ball 276 times for 2,526 yards and 34 touchdowns.



RB – Markell Jones, 5-10, 205, Columbus East (Ind.), Purdue
Mr. Football in Indiana, Jones put forth a Herculean effort as a senior, carrying the football 312 times for 3,536 yards and 60 touchdowns.

ATH - Brandon Wimbush, 6-2, 215, St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.), Notre Dame
The quarterback led St. Peter's Prep to a Non-Public Group IV state title by throwing for 3,187 yards and 37 touchdowns while rushing for 723 yards and five scores.

K – Kevin Robledo, 6-2, 170, Westlake (Westlake Village, Calif.)
Robledo was a true special teams weapon, connecting on 11 of 15 field goal attempts with a long of 48 yards.

First Team Defense


DL – Trenton Thompson, 6-4, 311, Westover (Albany, Ga.), Georgia
With 84 tackles and four sacks, Thompson was the Class AAAA Defensive Player of the Year.

DL – Terry Beckner, 6-4, 290, East St. Louis (Ill.)
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch Defensive Player of the Year, Beckner accumulated 116 tackles, three sacks and an interception.



DL – Rashan Gary, 6-4, 290, Paramus Catholic (N.J.)
The Star-Ledger Defensive Player of the Year, Gary made 55 tackles and 10 sacks to lead Paramus Catholic to the Non-Public Group IV title game.

DL – Joseph Wicker, 6-4, 275, Long Beach Poly (Calif.)
A Los Angeles Times all-area pick, Wicker feasted on opposing quarterbacks to the tune of 17.5 sacks.

LB – Justin Hilliard, 6-2, 200, St. Xavier (Cincinnati), Ohio State
One of the nation's top linebacker recruits, Hilliard was a Division 1 all-state pick, as well as Defensive Player of the Year.

LB – John Houston, 6-3, 218, Serra (Gardena, Calif.)
The Daily Breeze Defensive Player of the Year, Houston amassed 147 tackles as well as three sacks and three interceptions.

LB – Porter Gustin, 6-5, 250, Salem Hills (Salem, Utah)
A first team all-state pick, Gustin posted 152 tackles and 10.5 sacks when he wasn't busy playing quarterback.

LB – Jordan Griffin, 6-0, 200, Armwood (Seffner, Fla.), Wisconsin
Griffin was the Tampa Bay Times Defensive Player of the Year, leading a talented unit that included top recruit Byron Cowart. Griffin made 158 tackles and recovered seven fumbles.



LB – Josh Woods, 6-3, 210, Upland (Calif.), UCLA
Woods registered 92 tackles and 11 sacks to lead Upland's defense. He took home all-area honors by the Los Angeles Times.

DB – Iman Marshall, 6-1, 190, Long Beach Poly (Calif.)
Marshall was the Press-Telegram Defensive Player of the Year after quarterbacks refused to throw in his direction. He also starred at receiver as well as on special teams.

DB – Christian Kirk, 5-10, 190, Saguaro (Scottsdale, Ariz.), Texas A&M
Kirk took home Large School Player of the Year honors from the Arizona Republic after leading Saguaro to a state title and setting the state's career touchdown record. He intercepted four passes in the secondary.

DB – Holton Hill, 6-3, 180, Lamar (Houston)
The Houston Chronicle Defensive Player of the Year, Hill was named district MVP and posted an amazing 11 interceptions.

DB – Derwin James, 6-3, 205, Haines City (Fla.), Florida State
The Polk Preps Defensive Player of the Year, James was a human highlight reel in 2014. He made 94 tackles and four interceptions.

P – Austin Seibert, 5-10, 200, Belleville West (Ill.)
Seibert averaged 45 yards per punt and placed 21 inside the 20-yard line.

Second Team Offense




WR – Flynn Nagel, 6-0, 185, Lemont (Ill.), Duke
An all-state selection, Nagel hauled in 94 passes for 1,428 yards and 28 touchdowns. He also returned two punts for scores.

WR – Tyron Johnson, 6-1, 190, Easton (New Orleans)
An all-state pick, Johnson caught 94 passes for 1,589 yards and 17 touchdowns as Easton was Class 4A runner-up.

WR – Javon Mckinley, 6-2, 195, Centennial (Corona, Calif.)
McKinley enjoyed an enormous season for CIF Open Division Bowl Game finalist Centennial. He finished with 94 catches for 1,906 yards and 20 touchdowns.

TE – Tyrone Wheatley Jr, 6-6, 245, Canisius (Buffalo, N.Y.)
The Buffalo News Player of the Year, Wheatley was a reliable option at tight end when he wasn't lining up at defensive end, where he recorded 10 sacks.

OL – Javon Patterson, 6-4, 295, Petal (Miss.)
Patterson, who projects to be a guard in college, earned Class 6A first team all-state recognition.

OL – Jerry Tillery, 6-7, 317, Evangel Christian Academy (Shreveport, La.), Notre Dame
Tillery, a top-rated tackle, actually earned Shreveport Defensive Player of the Year honors for his work on the defensive line, where he made 93 tackles and seven sacks.



OL – Matt Burrell jr., 6-5, 302, Hylton (Woodbridge, Va.), Ohio State
The Columbus-bound Burrell was both an all-Met pick by the Washington Post and an all-state selection by Virginia Preps.

OL – Maea Teuhema, 6-5, 340, Keller (Texas), LSU
Teuhema was a Class 6A all-state pick after recording 108 pancakes.

OL – Drew Richmond, 6-5, 310, Memphis University (Tenn.), Ole Miss
An Ole Miss commit, Richmond earned Division II-AA all-state honors for his work up front for MUS.

QB – Aj Gray, 6-1, 195, Washington County (Sandersville, Ga.), Georgia Tech
The Peach State's all-classification Player of the Year, Gray rushed for 2,387 yards and 39 touchdowns while throwing for 1,810 yards and 21 scores. Incredibly, he intercepted 10 passes on defense, returning four for touchdowns.

QB – Tucker Israel, 6-1, 195, Lake Nona (Orlando, Fla.), Clemson
Israel, a record-setting signal caller, completed 317 of 470 passes for 4,446 yards and 56 touchdowns.

RB – Calvin Strong, 5-10, 175, Omaha North (Neb.), South Dakota
Strong carried the football 243 times for 2,354 yards and 35 touchdowns. A three-time all-state pick, he owns state records for career yards (7,478) and touchdowns (104).



RB – Rodney Anderson, 6-1, 195, Katy (Texas), Oklahoma
The Houston Chronicle's Offensive Player of the Year, Anderson led Katy to another state title appearance by rushing 251 times for 2,485 yards and 36 touchdowns.

RB – Nick Brossette, 6-0, 200, University Lab (Baton Rouge, La.), LSU
Brossette carried the ball 220 times for 1,833 yards and 31 touchdowns, earning Offensive Player of the Year honors in Louisiana's Class 3A. He finished his high school career with 8,704 yards and 163 total touchdowns.

ATH - Austin Kafentzis, 6-1, 195, Jordan (Sandy, Utah), Wisconsin
Kafentzis completed 221 of 394 passes for 3,862 yards and 40 touchdowns while rushing for 1,842 yards and 25 scores. He had one of the greatest high school careers ever, finishing with over 20,000 yards from scrimmage.

K – Tyler Bass, 5-7, 160, Dutch Fork (Irmo, S.C.)
An all-state pick, Bass was a touchback machine who also booted 15 field goals with a long of 47 yards.

Second Team Defense


DL – Byron Cowart, 6-4, 260, Armwood (Seffner, Fla.)
Cowart was an all-area selection by the Tampa Bay Times after registering 68 tackles and 12 sacks. He also blocked three punts.



DL – Shy Tuttle, 6-3, 320, North Davidson (Lexington, N.C.), Tennessee
Tuttle was among the leading vote-getters for North Carolina's all-state team. He was also an NCPreps all-state pick.

DL – Rex Manu, 6-3, 270, Mililani (Hawaii), Oregon
Manu took home Hawaii Defensive Player of the Year honors over the likes of Canton Kaumatule and Breiden Fehoko, an impressive achievement and a testament to how dominant he was as a senior.

DL – Christian Wilkins, 6-5, 280, Suffield Academy (Conn.)
Wilkins compiled 71 tackles and eight sacks while forcing four fumbles. He represented the state of Connecticut well by shining at the Under Armour All-American Game.

LB – Asmar Bilal, 6-3, 215, Ben Davis (Indianapolis), Notre Dame
Bilal was all over the field as a senior, compiling 155 tackles and six sacks and helping Ben Davis with a Class 6A state title.

LB – Leo Lewis, 6-3, 225, Brookhaven (Miss.), Ole Miss
The Class 5A Defensive Player of the Year, Lewis made 76 tackles as well as a sack and fumble recovery.

LB – Osa Masina, 6-4, 230, Brighton (Salt Lake City)
An all-state selection, Masina tallied 98 tackles and nine sacks, while also recording an interception and a safety. He contributed greatly to Brighton's offense as well.



LB – Roquan Smith, 6-2, 205, Macon County (Montezuma, Ga.)
Smith, the Class AA Defensive Player of the Year, made 79 tackles and five sacks and also forced three fumbles.

DB – Tarvarus Mcfadden, 6-3, 198, American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.), Florida State
McFadden, an all-area pick, blanketed receivers all season long. He made 40 tackles and picked off five passes.

DB – Niko Small, 6-0, 180, Bowie (Arlington, Texas)
The Class 6A Defensive Player of the Year, Small made 120 tackles, had six interceptions, blocked three kicks and scored three defensive touchdowns.

DB – Kendall Sheffield, 6-0, 180, Fort Bend Marshall (Missouri City, Texas)
Sheffield was a first team all-area pick by the Houston Chronicle after notching two defensive touchdowns and three blocked kicks.

DB – Denzel Ward, 5-11, 165, Nordonia (Macedonia, Ohio), Ohio State
Ward is the Cleveland.com Defensive Player of the Year after hauling in nine interceptions to go along with 20 touchdowns on offense. He led Nordonia to the Division II title game.

DB – Kevin Toliver, 6-2, 190, Trinity Christian Academy (Jacksonville, Fla.), LSU
Despite teams rarely throwing in his direction, Toliver still intercepted three passes and spent time at quarterback, leading Trinity Christian to a Class 3A state title.



P – Chayden Johnston, 6-0, 160, Bingham (South Jordan, Utah), Utah
Johnston thrived at helping 5A state champion Bingham win the field position battle. He averaged over 42 yards per punt with a long of 67.
