Basketball Recap: Luis Popoca's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Guadalupe Centers over Frontier School of Excellence

Guadalupe Centers was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They took a 56-44 hit to the loss column at the hands of Frontier School of Excellence. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against Frontier School of Excellence this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 55-23 back in December of 2024.

Several Aztecs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Luis Popoca, who posted nine points in addition to eight assists and eight steals. Popoca has been hot, having posted six or more steals the last six times he's played. Another player making a difference was Luis Recalde, who earned seven points along with seven assists and four steals.

Popoca wasn't the only one working in the assist department: Guadalupe Centers was working as a unit and finished the game with 19 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Guadalupe Centers' loss dropped their record down to 6-13. As for Frontier School of Excellence, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 15-3.

Coming up, Guadalupe Centers will square off against Union Star at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Frontier School of Excellence, they will be taking part in a tournament against Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
