Football Preview: Plainfield Quakers vs. New Palestine Dragons

After each having a week off, the Plainfield Quakers and the New Palestine Dragons will shake off the rust and duke it out at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Plainfield took a loss when they played away from home on October 10th, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed last Friday. They walked away with a 14-7 win over Martinsville. The 14-point effort marked the Quakers' lowest-scoring game of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.

Plainfield relied on the efforts of Luke Starnes, who rushed for 179 yards, and Zander Nattam, who picked up 99 receiving yards and a pair of scores. Starnes is becoming a predictor of the Quakers' success: when he posts at least 100 rushing yards the team is undefeated (and 1-2 when he doesn't).

Plainfield didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Martinsville to a completion percentage of just 48.9%. The team can thank Ty White for the heroic effort on defense: he. Plainfield hasn't an opponent to post a completion percentage of 0.42 or higher in six consecutive contests.

Plainfield didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of White and Tashawn Calahan. Plainfield got some further help from Mason Mantooth: he picked up a sack and made seven total tackles (2.0 for loss).

Meanwhile, New Palestine strolled into their game last Friday with a perfect record and they left with the same. They claimed a resounding 56-7 victory over Delta. With the Dragons ahead 42-7 at the half, the matchup was all but over already.

Plainfield better keep an eye on Jacob Davis. He was instrumental in New Palestine's win, throwing for 162 yards and three TDs on only 14 passes, while also rushing for 67 yards and one touchdown on only six carries. Josh Ranes was another key player, rushing for 102 yards.

Special teams played a big role in the game for New Palestine, adding 20 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Caden Jacobia, who ran a punt back for a touchdown. Another bright spot was a kickoff return touchdown from Kade Stephens.

On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to New Palestine's defense and their three sacks. The team can thank two different players for their defensive prowess: Sam Hirschy and Colin Whetsel, who each picked up 0.5 sacks apiece. Another thorn in Delta's side was Hirschy, who picked up 0.5 sacks and made eight total tackles (3.5 for loss).

New Palestine's win bumped their record up to 9-0. As for Plainfield, their victory bumped their record up to 7-2.

Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Plainfield has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 183.4 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like New Palestine struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 265.1 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground. Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other football content.
