Baseball Recap: Stone Victorious

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Stone ultimately got the result they hoped for on Thursday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Wayne County War Eagles 5-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Tomcats have posted since March 28th.

Kellan Burge spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned (and one unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up 13 Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. Ayden Obenhaus came in to relieve Burge and was airtight, giving up no runs, hits or walks in his an inning pitched.

At the plate, Stone's win was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Nolan Scott, who went 1-for-4 with one home run. Scott has become a key player for the Tomcats: the team is undefeated when he posts at least one home run, but 10-12 otherwise. Saylor Wintzell was another, going 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

The victory made it two in a row for Stone and bumps their season record up to 15-12. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.5 runs over those games. As for Wayne County, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost 13 of their last 14 matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-18 record this season.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Stone beat Wayne County by a score of 9-4 on Friday.
