The Thunderbird Titans are taking a road trip to take on the Mesquite Wildcats at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Mesquite took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Thunderbird, who comes in off a win.
On Tuesday, Thunderbird made easy work of Moon Valley and carried off an 11-1 victory. Considering the Titans have won six contests by more than seven runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Thunderbird let Austin Coates and Adam Gauthier run wild. Coates scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-1, while Gauthier scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3. Another player making a difference was Andrew Cohill, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, Mesquite suffered their closest loss since April 22, 2024 on Tuesday. They fell just short of Saguaro by a score of 9-7. The Wildcats haven't had much luck with the Sabercats recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.
Gunnar Gift was cooking despite his team's loss, going 3-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That triple marked the first that he hit this season. Bently Sandall was another key player, scoring two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
Even though they lost, Mesquite hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts in five consecutive matchups.
Thunderbird's win bumped their record up to 8-5. As for Mesquite, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-4.
Wednesday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Thunderbird has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .460. However, it's not like Mesquite struggles in that department as they've averaged .452. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Thunderbird might still be hurting after the 16-0 loss they got from Mesquite when the teams last played back in March of 2019. Can Thunderbird avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
