Baseball Recap: East Wilkes Find Success

While East Wilkes's victory against Alleghany wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Cardinals narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Trojans 4-2. The Cardinals haven't had any issues with the Trojans recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.

Elijah Johnson made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits (and only one walk). He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-3. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in doubles (two).

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Seth Lambert, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-2. Another player making a difference was Kaden Oliver, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.

East Wilkes hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Alleghany struck out six times.

East Wilkes' win bumped their record up to 8-3. As for Alleghany, their loss was their ninth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 2-12.

Looking ahead, East Wilkes will venture away from home to square off against Avery County at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Cardinals' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Vikings have averaged an impressive 6.3 runs per game this season. As for Alleghany, they will look to defend their home field on Wednesday against Bishop McGuinness at 7:00 p.m. The Villains have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.2 runs per game on average), something the Trojans will no doubt try to take advantage of.
