Preview: Irwin County Indians vs. Pelham Hornets
The Irwin County Indians will head out on the road to face off against the Pelham Hornets at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Irwin County focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 28 on Tuesday.
Irwin County lost a heartbreaker to Wilcox County when they met back in February of 2023, and they left with a heavy heart again. Irwin County fell just short of Wilcox County by a score of 52-49. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat Irwin County has suffered against Wilcox County since February 1, 2019.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Sam Guy, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 20 rebounds. He is on a roll when it comes to blocks, as he's now posted two or more in the last 18 games he's played. Another player making a difference was Jaylen Martin, who scored 15 points along with eight rebounds and two steals.
Pelham can finally bid farewell to their three-game losing streak thanks to their game on Saturday. They walked away with a 54-47 victory over Bacon County.
Irwin County's loss dropped their record down to 6-17. As for Pelham, their victory bumped their record up to 8-10.
Irwin County was able to grind out a solid victory over Pelham when the teams last played last Tuesday, winning 56-46. The rematch might be a little tougher for Irwin County since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
