Baseball Recap: Cheney Tech Snags Seventh Victory in Last Nine Games

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Cheney Tech had no problem doing just that on Monday. They blew past the Wilcox RVT Wildcats 11-4. Considering the Chargers have won eight matchups by more than six runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

Spencer Johnson spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up eight Ks. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Morgan Salkeld and Thomas Fortunato did most of the damage at the plate: Salkeld got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double, while Fortunato went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one double. Salkeld has become a key player for Cheney Tech: the team is 8-2 when he posts at least two runs, but 4-5 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Malik Mendez, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs.

Cheney Tech has been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-7 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.3 runs over those games. As for Wilcox RVT, their defeat ended a nine-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 14-7.

As of now, neither Cheney Tech nor the Wildcats have any future games scheduled.
