Discovery Canyon is 8-2 against Cheyenne Mountain since September of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Thunder will square off against the Red-Tailed Hawks at 4:00 p.m. Discovery Canyon has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the matchup with five straight defeats, while Cheyenne Mountain will come in with three straight wins.
Pueblo County hit Discovery Canyon with a four-run seventh inning on Saturday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Thunder fell 8-4 to the Hornets. That's two games in a row now that the Thunder have lost by exactly four runs.
Bella Holcomb put in work no matter where she played. She struck out six batters over six innings while giving up three earned (and five unearned) runs off four hits. Holcomb was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
Holcomb wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Taylor McCann, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Cheyenne Mountain made easy work of Lewis-Palmer on Friday and carried off a 14-3 victory. Considering the Red-Tailed Hawks have won ten games by more than six runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Like Discovery Canyon, Cheyenne Mountain also got a great game from a two-way player: Addison Gutschick. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits (and only one walk). Gutschick was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Abbi Houger was a standout: she got on base in four of her five plate appearances with three RBI and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in August. Another player making a difference was Rylie Hanna, who went 1-for-2 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run.
Cheyenne Mountain hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in four consecutive contests.
Cheyenne Mountain's record now sits at 15-4. As for Discovery Canyon, their loss dropped their record down to 6-14.
Monday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Discovery Canyon hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .315. However, it's not like Cheyenne Mountain struggles in that department as they've averaged .341. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Discovery Canyon came up short against Cheyenne Mountain in their previous matchup on Thursday, falling 5-1. Can the Thunder avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
