Basketball Recap: Leetonia Drops Season-High Score on Southern

Leetonia hadn't done well against Southern recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Bears managed a 73-69 victory over the Indians. The Bears' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Leetonia to victory, but perhaps none more so than Ethan Mathia, who shot 55% from the field en route to 26 points and eight rebounds. Those eight boards gave Mathia a new career-high. Dylan Johns was another key player, putting up 23 points and three steals.

Leetonia was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Leetonia's win ended a four-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-4. As for Southern, they are on a six-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-4.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Leetonia will head out to face off against Wellsville at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Bears will be up against the Tigers' rather soft defense (which has allowed 54.4 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Southern, they will venture away from home to take on Columbiana at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The Indians' defense better be ready for this one: the Clippers have averaged an impressive 60 points per game this season.
