Recap: Sweeny Bulldogs vs. La Marque Cougars

The Sweeny Bulldogs won a close one the last time they played, but unfortunately they suffered a serious change of fortune on Friday. They were beaten by La Marque 74-46. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Sweeny of the 62-34 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in January.

Sweeny lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Clinton Varner, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and ten rebounds. Varner is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down nine or more in the last four games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Kendrick Hernandez, who scored 14 points along with six steals.

La Marque was led to victory by Brendan Harris and Jecaryous Oliver. Harris dropped a double-double on 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Oliver scored 18 points along with three steals. Another player making a difference was Derrick Edison, who scored nine points along with three steals.

Sweeny's loss dropped their record down to 15-15. As for La Marque, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 16-16 record this season.

Sweeny will head out on the road to square off against Brazosport at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Sweeny is facing Brazosport at the right time seeing as Brazosport is stuck on a six-game losing streak. As for La Marque, they will be playing at home against Bay City at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The timing is sure in La Marque's favor as the squad sits on three straight wins at home while Bay City has been banged up by five consecutive losses on the road.
