Baseball Recap: Greenup County Comes Up Short

Greenup County fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Huntington on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Highlanders by a score of 6-5. The Musketeers' loss signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.

Brody Howard was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he tossed 7.2 innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off nine hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one walk in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Luke Boggs and Sawyer Hatfield did some serious damage despite the final result: Boggs went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double, while Hatfield got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. Hatfield is becoming a predictor of Greenup County's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 6-3 (and 9-10-1 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Kyler Robinson, who went 3-for-4 with one run.

Greenup County's defeat dropped their record down to 15-13-1. As for Huntington, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a massive bump to their 14-12 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Greenup County will take on Portsmouth West at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Huntington, they will face off against Raceland at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Highlanders' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Rams have averaged an impressive 7.3 runs per game this season.
