Basketball Recap: Donovan Coates' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Collinsville over Althoff Catholic

If Collinsville was riding high fresh off their 77-33 takedown of McCluer on Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Collinsville Kahoks fell 66-59 to the Althoff Catholic Crusaders on Saturday. The Kahoks were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Crusaders apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2024.

Collinsville's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Donovan Coates, who posted 21 points and three steals. Coates' evening made it five games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Jace Wilkinson, who went 7 of 13 en route to 20 points and five rebounds.

Even though they lost, Collinsville smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 13 offensive boards in three consecutive matchups.

Collinsville's loss dropped their record down to 11-11. As for Althoff Catholic, the victory (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 18-4.

The future could be bright for both Collinsville and Althoff Catholic: their next opponents haven't had the best luck recently. Collinsville will try to hand Metro-East Lutheran their third-straight defeat when the two meet at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Althoff Catholic will look to extend Granite City's four-game losing streak when the meet at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
