League recap: Coronado scores huge upset over Americas

5A Region I District 1 recap September 24, 2013

The biggest upset of the week belonged to Coronado, who took down 178th ranked Americas, 38-35. Mickey Courtney threw for 315 yards and 2 touchdowns in the win.

El Dorado moved up to 185 from 245 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 5A Region I District 1. The Aztecs climbed the ranks as a result of topping Eastwood 49-17.

Orlando Garcia and Isak Washington gave the Trail Blazers a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Garcia threw for 283 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Washington ran for 187 yards. Teammate Garcia added to the ground attack by rushing for 36 yards.

Garcia and Washington gave Americas a balanced attack in passing and rushing last week.

Washington was the best running back in the league this week.

Garcia put up the best numbers in passing as Patrick Melton's team lost to the Thunderbirds. Garcia's favorite target this week was Q Drennan, who caught 4 passes for 124 yards.

Branon Bogan was the best receiver in the league this week as Coronado topped the Trail Blazers. Bogan tallied 6 receptions for 173 yards. Josh Brady helped Coronado's passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 57 yards.

He was 19-32 with 1 interception.

Cameron Candelaria was a passing and rushing force as Franklin defeated Socorro. He completed 10 passes for 179 yards and 3 touchdowns and also ran for 166 yards. Candelaria's key target this week was Michael Coleman, who caught 4 passes for 112 yards.

Leading 5A Region I District 1 in both passing and receiving yards, the Cougars' Candelaria and Aaron Smith have proven to be a lethal combination. Candelaria has thrown for 1,154 yards this season, while Smith, a 5-foot-10 receiver, has 16 catches for 519 yards. Lederrick Wilson from El Dorado leads the league in rushing with 758 yards.

As it stands, the Troopers are in second, while Bob Anderson's team is in third.

Montwood was the team that made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving from third to first in the league. Earlier in the week, the Rams triumphed over Bel Air 49-14.
