Basketball Recap: Wheeler Triumphs

It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but Wheeler ultimately got the result they hoped for on Thursday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Highland Trojans, sneaking past 66-64. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Bearcats also won the last time the pair played back in January of 2025.

Wheeler had a senior duo take command as Caleb Mclaughlin shot 64% from the field en route to 19 points and Nick Scott went 7-for-12 from beyond the arc to rack up 21 points. Thanks to that strong game, Mclaughlin now owns an excellent 46.2% shooting accuracy. Ty Schafer was another key player, putting up 12 points.

Highland's loss came despite strong showings from Justin Slaven and Cameron Katz. Slaven shot 60% from the field on his way to 28 points along with eight boards and three steals, while Katz went 6-for-13 en route to 19 points and seven assists. The game was Slaven's sixth in a row with at least 17 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Demetrius Varvaris, who posted six points.

Wheeler's win bumped their record up to 4-5. As for Highland, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 6-7.

Wheeler didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, an 80-45 loss against Griffith on the 10th. As for Highland, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 42-35 victory against Lowell on the 10th.
