Preview: Williston-Elko Blue Devils vs. Wagener-Salley War Eagles
Williston-Elko is 2-8 against Wagener-Salley since January of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Williston-Elko Blue Devils will be staying on the road to face off against the Wagener-Salley War Eagles at 6:30 p.m. on January 19th. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this match.
Last Tuesday, Williston-Elko was just a bucket shy of victory and fell 46-45 to Calhoun County. Williston-Elko has not had much luck with Calhoun County recently, as the team's come up short the last eight times they've met.
Meanwhile, Wagener-Salley's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their fifth straight loss. They were beaten by Denmark-Olar 64-8. While losing is never fun, Wagener-Salley can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 270th, while Denmark-Olar is ranked 47th).
Williston-Elko's loss dropped their record down to 5-4. As for Wagener-Salley, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost six of their last seven matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-11 record this season.
Williston-Elko took their win against Wagener-Salley in their previous meeting back in January of 2023 by a conclusive 52-31. The rematch might be a little tougher for Williston-Elko since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
