Football Recap: Germantown Comes Up Short in High-Profile Matchup with Oxford

Germantown faced Oxford in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Mavericks and the Chargers were almost perfectly matched up, but the Mavericks suffered a 43-42 loss. The Mavericks gained 161 more yards on the day, but it was the Chargers that made the best use of them.

Germantown lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was King White, who rushed for 96 yards and one touchdown, and also threw for 200 yards and a pair of TDs. Nyrikius Johnson helped out on the ground, rushing for 93 yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Oxford found their leader in sophomore Demar Jamerson, who rushed for 131 yards and three scores. Those three rushing touchdowns set a new season-high mark for Jamerson. Kevin Smith was another key player, picking up 96 receiving yards and one TD.

The defeat snapped Germantown's winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 4-3 record. As for Oxford, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 6-1.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Germantown is set to take on their familiar foe Madison Central at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Oxford will face off against rival Clinton at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
