Northern California roundup: De La Salle, Folsom on collision course

DUBLIN, Calif. — The 151-game win streak by De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) from 1992 to 2004 is considered perhaps the greatest record in high school sports.

But following a 49-17 North Coast Section Division I title win over California-San Ramon Saturday at Dublin, the Spartans have continued another remarkable run.

Six different players rushed for touchdowns and sophomore Antoine Custer added a 67-yard punt return as the Spartans won their 22nd consecutive NCS title and extended their unbeaten streak against Northern California opponents to a staggering 249 games. They've also won 39 games in a row.
 
John Velasco rushed for 234 yards and opened the scoring with a 28-yard run and Custer (21 yards), quarterback Chris Williams (6 yards), Jevari Anderson (57 yards), Andrew Hernandez (6 yards) and Anthony Talaugon (49 yards) also rushed for scores and De La Salle rushed for more than 500 yards.

De La Salle (13-0), ranked fifth nationally by MaxPreps, now awaits a probable invitation Sunday to play No. 16 Folsom (14-0) in the Northern California Regional Open Division finals. The 10 CIF State commissioners will pick the regional finalist Sunday.



California (11-3), which lost 55-0 to De La Salle a month ago, showed well behind quarterback Matt Lorenz, who threw for more than 200 yards but the Grizzlies couldn't stop the Spartans on the ground.

Velasco finished with 14 carries and 234 yards and Custer seven carries, 79 yards.

Division II
Miramonte (Orinda) 41, Casa Grande (Petaluma 28

At Rancho Cotate-Rohnert Park, Drew Anderson completed 21 of 39 for 437 yards and five touchdowns, two of them to his brother Ryan Anderson (4 catches, 123 yards) in the fourth quarter to put Miramonte (12-2) in front for good 35-28. … The Matadors won their ninth NCS title, but first since 2003 and spoiled a perfect season for Casa Grande (13-1), which was after its first NCS title. … Casa Grande took its first lead on John Porchivina's second touchdown run on a 4-yarder to go up 21-14 midway through the third quarter. … But Anderson completed a 27-yard TD pass to Dominic Paoletti (6 catches, 167 yards, two TDs) to tie it up. … Porchivina (27 rushes, 155 yards) and JaJuan Lawson (170 yards passing, 104 yards rushing) led the way for Casa Grande. … Drew Anderson finished with 4,183 yards passing and 47 touchdowns. ... Anderson and Paoletti put the finishing touches on this one with a 27-yard TD pass and catch on the last play of the game.

Division IV postponed

Due to road closures along Highway 5 and 101 from weather conditions, the Saint Mary's (Albany) (9-4) title game versus Fortuna (10-2) at Humboldt College was postponed and no makeup date has been set. The Panthers, led by former Balboa coach Keith Minor, started the 5-hour, 300-mile trek on Friday but were told to turnaround about 100 miles into the trip. NCS commissioner Gil Lemmon said Saturday the teams would determine Monday a time and date No makeup date has yet to be determined.

Division I
Folsom 49, Oak Ridge 17

If the Folsom versus De La Salle showdown that most anticipate wasn't imminent before, it was after Folsom captured its second straight SJS Division I crown at Sacramento State. … Folsom and De La Salle won its championship games by the exact same score. … Jake Browning, already the state record holder for touchdown passes, threw for five more, four to Troy Knox for 23, 57, 3 and 6 yards, and he added a pair of one-yard runs. …. Browning, the Gatorade State Player of the Year, came into the game 378 of 489 (77 percent) for 5,093 yards, 69 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. … and 56 yards as the Bulldogs improved to 14-0. … Knox now has 14 touchdown catches and Josiah Deguara, who caught at 15-yard TD pass, now has 16 TD receptions. … Folsom broke open a close game by scoring the last 28 points. … The Bulldogs will undoubtedly play De La Salle in the Open Division title game at a site, day and time to be determined Sunday. … Last year, De La Salle handed Folsom its only defeat 49-15.

Central Catholic (Modesto) 24, Hilmar 10

Matt Ringer rushed 40 times, according to the Modesto Bee, for 243 yards and two touchdowns and junior Nic Navarro had two key interceptions to lift Central Catholic (13-1) to its record 17th SJS title with a win at Lincoln High's Alex G. Spanos Stadium. … The defending regional champion took a 24-0 lead before Hilmar (13-1) fought back. … Ringer scored on runs of 41 and 4 yards and Hunter Petlansky completed a 30-yard TD pass to Jared Rice.

Division II
Los Gatos 31, St. Francis 14

San Diego State-bound Nick Bawden completed 13 of 25 for 280 yards and touchdowns of 63 and 70 yards to Corey Olivet as Los Gatos (10-3) won its 14 CCS crown over top-seed and defending champion St. Francis (9-4) at Westmont-Campbell. … Joey Wood rushed 27 times for 138 yards for Los Gatos, while Alex Andrighetto rushed 18 times for 142 yards and a TD for St. Francis, which defeated Los Gatos 17-0 in last year's finals. ... Bawden also rushed for a touchdown and Wood clinched it on a TD run with 4:21 remaining.

Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton) 56, Pacific Grove 21

At Independence-San Jose, it was all Andrew Segre, who rushed 29 times for 354 yards and six touchdowns as top seed Sacred Heart Prep (12-1) won its second straight title and third in four years. … Segre set the tone early with TD runs of 57 and 49 yards in the first quarter. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound senior added TD runs of 15 and 17 by halftime and had 268 yards rushing. … Pacific Grove (11-2) closed to 28-14 on the last play of the first half, but the Gators responded immediately in the third quarter on a 24-yard run by Ben Burr-Kirven. … Pacific Grove closed to 35-21 on a Dylan Chesney 1-yard TD catch from Luke Lowell. … But SHP put it away on an 11-yard run by Segre followed by a 57-yard interception return by Andrew Robinson. …Segre added a 35-yard TD run down the stretch. … SHP will be considered for the D3 NorCal regional Sunday.
