Basketball Recap: Sierra Grande Extends Winning Streak to Five

Sierra Grande came tearing into Saturday's match with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 44.3 points) and they left with even more momentum. They blew past the Cotopaxi Pirates 56-34. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Panthers also won the last time the pair played back in February of 2022.

Sierra Grande was led to victory by Aron Ojeda and Jadyn Martinez. Ojeda shot 4-for-6 from deep and almost dropped a double-double on 24 points and nine rebounds, while Martinez almost dropped a double-double on 16 points and nine boards. Martinez is also crushing it when it comes to steals: he's grabbed at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Kobe Mizokami, who posted 12 points.

Sierra Grande smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 14 offensive boards in eight consecutive games.

Despite the loss, Cotopaxi saw an underclassman step up: freshman Kenny Teter had six points in addition to 17 boards and four blocks. Dylan Bond also deserves some recognition as he posted his first block of the season.

Sierra Grande's record now sits at 9-2. As for Cotopaxi, the defeat snapped their winning streak at four games and leaves them with a 6-3 record.

Sierra Grande wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 70-59 win against Kim/Branson on the 28th. Cotopaxi has also already played their next matchup, a 54-40 victory against Miami-Yoder on the 28th.
