Football Recap: Houston Comes Up Short

After flying high against Cordova last Friday, Houston came back down to earth. The Mustangs fell just short of the Oak Grove Warriors by a score of 28-25 on Friday. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' football rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 131st in Tennessee, while the Warriors are ranked 18th in Mississippi).

Despite the defeat, Houston saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Canon Day rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns on only 12 carries, and also threw for 157 yards on 12 of 24 attempts. Those 147 rushing yards set a new season-high mark for Day.

Roman Causey produced another solid performance rushing for 123 yards and three TDs for Oak Grove. With that strong performance, Causey is now averaging an impressive 104.4 rushing yards per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Kellen Hall, who threw for 177 yards and one touchdown.

Houston's loss dropped their record down to 1-6. As for Oak Grove, their victory was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 4-2.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Houston will welcome Arlington at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Tigers' defense has only allowed 11 points per game this season, so the Mustangs' offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Oak Grove, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against Petal at 7:00 p.m. This will be the Warriors' first chance to prove their worth in the conference.
